Barite (BaSO4) is valued for its density: 4.2–4.5 specific gravity is what makes it the standard weighting agent in drilling mud. Drilling grade concentrate normally requires a specific gravity of at least 4.20 and 90% BaSO4, so the job of the beneficiation circuit is to remove low density gangue, not simply to float a mineral.

| Ore Condition | Route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse barite, simple silicate gangue | Jigging or dense media separation | Lowest cost per tonne; barite's high density does the separation, but fines are lost |
| Fine dissemination, or gangue near the barite density | Flotation | Gravity cannot separate close densities; flotation works on surface chemistry instead |
| Barite with fluorite or iron oxides | Flotation with selective separation | Fluorite and iron-bearing minerals require a controlled reagent scheme to reject |
Many plants run gravity first and flotation on the fines; the two are complementary rather than competing.
Barite is a soft, dense mineral, so the circuit faces two different problems. Because it is brittle, over-grinding creates slimes that are hard to float and hard to filter. Because grade is judged by density and BaSO4 content, a concentrate that floats well but carries fine silica still fails the drilling grade specification.
The cell separates agitation from aeration, so pulp suspension and air rate are set independently. That makes it practical to run a gentle pulp condition for slime control while still delivering the aeration the froth needs.
| Ore Type | Main Challenge | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse crystalline barite | Preserving coarse particles while rejecting quartz | Gravity pre-concentration plus flotation on fines |
| Fine disseminated barite | Slime generation, low flotation recovery | Staged grinding, desliming, higher collector dosage in the fines circuit |
| Barite with fluorite | Two industrial minerals in one ore | Selective flotation with depressants, separate cleaning circuits |
| Barite with iron oxides | Iron lowers brightness and limits paint grade use | Magnetic separation after flotation, or acid leaching for brightness |
Sizing follows pulp flow, not tonnage alone: 100 tpd usually corresponds to 2–6 m³/min of pulp flow and suits 4–16 m³ cells; 300 tpd suits 16–40 m³; 500 tpd and above suits 40–160 m³.

Barite is soft, around 3–3.5 on the Mohs scale, so wear comes mainly from the silica gangue rather than from the barite itself. Polyurethane is the usual first choice; where quartz content is high, high alumina ceramic or silicon carbide composite gives longer intervals. Fine barite also packs into clearance gaps, so maintenance intervals should be planned around slurry density. Parts follow standard dimensions: flotation wear parts range.
Q1: Can flotation reach drilling grade barite?
A: Yes, when the gangue is silicate and liberation is adequate. Whether the concentrate meets the specific gravity and BaSO4 limits is confirmed by test work on your ore.
Q2: Is gravity separation enough?
A: Only for coarse ore with a clear density difference. Fines and close density gangue need flotation.
Q3: How is fluorite in the ore handled?
A: By selective staged flotation with depressants, usually in separate conditioning and cleaning circuits.
Q4: Is an external blower required?
A: Yes. Air is supplied externally and adjusted independently of the impeller, which keeps froth steady without over-agitating the pulp.
Cells ship by sea in wooden cases or containers, assembled or in sections by size. To size a bank and quote, three inputs are enough: ore throughput in tpd, feed BaSO4 content and specific gravity, and the target grade or end use (drilling, paint, filler). Send those with your test data and we return a cell arrangement with the matching flotation cell range and wear part list.
