Flake graphite is upgraded by flotation, and the value of the product depends on two things: carbon grade and flake size. A circuit that reaches high grade but breaks the flakes sells at a lower price than one that preserves them. Our cells are applied across 4 m³ to 160 m³ effective volume, from single test banks to full concentrators.
Graphite is soft and slippery, so every unnecessary grinding pass and every over-agitated cell reduces the coarse flake fraction, which carries the highest price per tonne. The rule is: liberate at the coarsest size, float coarse flakes early, regrind only locked middlings.
Cell selection therefore matters more than in sulfide duty: a cell that agitates too hard damages the product before it reaches the launder. This design separates agitation from aeration, so air rate and froth depth are adjusted without raising shear in the pulp.
Regrinding only the middlings is the largest single lever on both flake retention and grinding power cost.
| Ore Type | Main Challenge | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse flake graphite ore | Preserving flake size through the circuit | Coarse grind, early rougher, regrind middlings only, low shear cells |
| Fine flake or amorphous graphite | Low value per tonne, high reagent cost | Higher reagent efficiency, fewer cleaning stages, focus on throughput |
| Graphite with mica or clay gangue | Mica floats with graphite and lowers grade | Dispersant addition, desliming, tighter froth control in cleaning |
| Weathered or oxidized ore | Poor flotation response of oxidized surfaces | Higher collector dosage, staged addition, blending with fresh ore |
| Fraction | Typical Use | Circuit Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse, +80 to +100 mesh | Refractories, crucibles, foundry coatings | Protect flake size: coarse grind, early rougher, regrind middlings only |
| Medium, −100 to +200 mesh | Lubricants, friction materials, pencils | Balance grade against flake retention, two cleaning stages |
| Fine, −200 mesh | Feed for spherical graphite and battery anode material | Grade and low ash matter more than flake size, tighter cleaning |
Flotation typically delivers 90–97% carbon; above that requires chemical or thermal purification, which is a separate process. The flotation stage must deliver a clean, low-ash concentrate with flake size intact, so reagent dosing accuracy is usually paired with the bank through an automatic reagent dosing system.
Sizing follows pulp flow, not tonnage alone: 100 tpd usually corresponds to 2–6 m³/min of pulp flow and suits 4–16 m³ cells; 300 tpd suits 16–40 m³; 500 tpd and above suits 40–160 m³. For flake protection, use the fewest cleaning stages that still meet grade and keep impeller speed at the low end.

Graphite itself is soft and acts as a lubricant, so the abrasive load is lower than in ore flotation, but the silica gangue still wears the rotor and stator, and fine graphite tends to pack into clearance gaps. Polyurethane handles this duty well; where silica content is high, high alumina ceramic or silicon carbide composite gives longer intervals between replacements. Parts follow standard dimensions, so an existing graphite plant can change material grade without modifying the cell. Full range: flotation wear parts.
Q1: Does flotation break the flakes?
A: Not by itself. Damage comes from over-grinding and excessive shear, which is why regrinding is limited to middlings.
Q2: What carbon grade can flotation reach?
A: Usually 90–97% carbon depending on the ore. Purity above that requires chemical or thermal purification.
Q3: Which reagents are used?
A: Usually kerosene or diesel as collector with a frother, plus sodium silicate as dispersant when silicate gangue is present.
Q4: Is an external blower required?
A: Yes. Air is supplied externally and controlled independently of the impeller, so aeration can be tuned without raising shear.
Cells ship by sea in wooden cases or containers, assembled or in sections by size. Concentrate handling is a separate matter: flake product is usually packed in lined bags or bulk bags to avoid breakage in transit, and we plan the launder and froth cone layout with that in mind.
To size a bank and quote, three inputs are enough: ore throughput in tpd, feed carbon grade, and the flake fraction or concentrate grade you are targeting. Send those with your test work and we return a cell arrangement with the corresponding flotation cell range and wear part list.
