What Types of Ore Can Be Processed by Flotation?

Flotation is a widely used mineral processing method that separates valuable minerals from gangue based on differences in their surface properties. It is commonly applied to sulfide ores, precious metal ores, certain oxide ores, and non-metallic minerals.

In a flotation process, finely ground ore is mixed with water and flotation reagents to form a slurry. Air is introduced into the flotation machine to generate bubbles. Hydrophobic mineral particles attach to the bubbles and rise to the surface, forming a mineralized froth that can be collected. Hydrophilic particles generally remain in the slurry and are discharged as tailings.

Common Ore Types Processed by Flotation

1. Copper Ore

Sulfide copper ores, including chalcopyrite and bornite, are commonly processed by flotation. Some oxide copper ores, such as malachite and azurite, can also be treated using specialized methods such as sulfidization flotation.

2. Gold Ore

Flotation is commonly used for gold ores associated with sulfide minerals, such as pyrite. It concentrates gold-bearing minerals for further treatment.

3. Lead-Zinc Ore

Lead-zinc ores containing galena and sphalerite are widely processed through selective or bulk flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates.

4. Nickel and Molybdenum Ore

Sulfide nickel ores and molybdenite-bearing ores are commonly upgraded by flotation to recover valuable minerals.

5. Iron and Non-Metallic Ores

Certain iron ores, phosphate, fluorite, graphite, and barite can also be processed by direct or reverse flotation, depending on their mineral characteristics.

What Makes an Ore Suitable for Flotation?

Not every ore is suitable for conventional flotation. Its suitability depends on several factors:

  • Mineral composition and surface properties

  • Mineral liberation after grinding

  • Particle size and slurry conditions

  • Suitable flotation reagents

  • Expected recovery and concentrate quality

Mineralogical analysis and laboratory flotation tests help determine whether flotation is suitable and which process should be used.

How to Select the Right Flotation Machine

Flotation equipment should match the ore characteristics and plant requirements. Key considerations include processing capacity, grinding fineness, slurry flow rate, flotation stages, and required residence time.
